Downloading Android Auto and using it in your car: that’s how you do it

Downloading and installing Android Auto is a breeze, but you have to know how it works. This way you can put Google’s app on your Android phone on the go.

Download and install Android Auto in 5 steps

For years, Android Auto was not officially available in the Netherlands, but that changed at the end of 2020. Google then announced that it would also bring the platform to the Netherlands on the road. So you no longer have to download Android Auto in a detour. But, it might not work on your phone (yet). In that case, it is of course still possible to download Android Auto on your phone. That is how it works:

1. To prepare

Download the free app ‘ Droid Hardware Info ‘ from the Play Store and open the app;

2. Which processor do you have?

Accept the permissions and click on the second tab: “System”. Write down what is written after “Instruction Series”. In my case it is “arm64-v8a” .;

3. Download Android Auto

Exit the Droid Hardware Info app and on your Android smartphone go to APK Mirror and select the latest Android Auto update;

4. Choose the correct version

Choose the correct variant for your smartphone on the basis of the previously noted Instruction Series. So in the example, this is arm64-v8a;

5. to install

Give permission to download the APK file, then wait a while and choose to install the app.

Is it not working? Then try downloading a different Android Auto version by choosing a different version from the list on APK Mirror. It may also pay off to download Android Auto from another website, such as APK Pure. You need at least Android 5.0 (Lollipop) to put Google’s on-the-go platform on your smartphone.

Not sure about downloading apps outside of the Play Store? Then read our article about installing APK files on your Android device. In this guide, we explain in detail how to install applications off the beaten track.

Does not it work?

Do you get a notification asking if you want to update Android Auto? Which can! In that case, Android Auto is already installed on your smartphone. This is especially the case with recent Android phones that run on Android 10 and Android 11.

Install Android Auto in your car

Is Android Auto on your phone? Then it is then a matter of connecting. Connect your phone to your car with a USB cable and Android Auto should start immediately.

The simplified version of the operating system appears on the phone screen or the built-in display of your dashboard. Do you use Android Auto on your smartphone? Then use a holder to secure the device: after all, it is prohibited to use your phone while on the move.

Android Auto works in these cars

Not all cars can work with Android Auto. The official website has a list of all supported car models. It now contains more than 500 cars, including cars from Audi, Citroën, Opel and Peugeot.

In general, cars made before 2015 will not work with Android Auto. Owners of BMWs and Toyotas also have bad luck: these brands do not (yet) support the operating system.
