How do I make sure my Apple Watch straps fit?

If you have an Apple Watch, you want the watch strap to fit properly. In this article, we’ll discuss what to look out for if you want to choose the right size straps.

An Apple Watch band must fit properly

Apple releases a huge collection of Apple Watch bands, in all kinds of colors and designs. It is also important to pay attention to the size because if the strap fits well, it is more comfortable to wear and the heart rate monitor works better. In this guide, you can read everything about choosing well-fitting watch straps for the Apple Watch. We discuss the compatibility of straps for 38mm / 40mm on the one hand and 42mm / 44mm on the other and we look at the wrist circumference that applies to the different straps.

Apple Watch: Will my old straps fit?

If you switch to a new Apple Watch, you want to be able to use your old straps. The Apple Watch Series 4 has switched to a larger format: 40mm and 44mm. Previously this was 38mm and 42mm. Now you may be wondering whether previously purchased straps are still usable. That is the case indeed. The straps fit together.

This is how the Apple Watch straps fit the different models:

  • 38mm and 40mm are interchangeable
  • 42mm and 44mm are interchangeable

This also applies to future bands. The only exception is the Solo bands that have been available since 2020 and where the dimensions are very closely related. We will discuss this later.old straps fit

In theory, you could also attach a 38mm strap to a 44mm Apple Watch. Every size strap clicks, regardless of the size of the watch case. But the connection (‘lug’) does not connect properly in that case.

Determine the correct size for Solo bands

The Solobandje and the Braided Solobandje are available in 9 different sizes. It is therefore important that you choose the right size, otherwise, the strap will not fit properly. When in doubt, Apple recommends going down a size, as these straps can stretch slightly during use.

The Solobandje (Solo Loop) and the Braided Solobandje (Braided Solo Loop) are one-piece bands. Due to size, you can only use them on Apple Watch Series 4 and later. This is because the dimensions are quite precise. In fact, you could also use these straps with the earlier models of 38mm and 42mm, but we recommend that you go to the Apple Store to try on which size is best.Determine the correct size for Solo bands

Apple has therefore made a tool that allows you to determine the correct size. You have to print this out and cut it out and then wrap it around your wrist. The number between the arrows indicates the measure. This is a number between 1 and 12. The first hands-on experience with the Apple Watch Series 6 shows that you often need a smaller size than the fitting aid indicates. If a size 10 is indicated, it may well be that size 7-8 actually fits better. The dimensions of the Soloband and the Braided Soloband also do not seem to be exactly the same. If you ordered online, you can easily return your strap.

Determine wrist circumference

To find out your wrist size, do the following:

  1. Grab a piece of string or cord.
  2. Wrap the string around your wrist and make sure it is snug, but not too tight.
  3. Put the string along a ruler and you know the wrist size.

You can read more about it in our guide to determining the correct Apple Watch size.
