Aformer BMW employee will now join Apple to work on the company’s not-so-secret car project. It concerns the former senior executive of the car manufacturer and also founder of an autonomous vehicle startup, Ulrich Kranz. Apple itself has not released anything about this.
It is no longer a secret that Apple is working on an Apple Car. This is apparent from, among other things, acquisitions of companies and recruited personnel. The iPhone maker has not yet released anything about the project. Now Apple has attracted another driving force in the form of Ulrich Kranz.
Apple hires BMW CEO
Apple brings in Kranz just weeks after the man stepped down as CEO of the startup Canoo. This startup focuses on autonomous vehicles. Before that, Kranz worked as a CEO at car manufacturer BMW. During his thirty years of service there, he was responsible for the electric i3 and i8, among other things.
Before starting his own company, Kranz worked for three months at Faraday Future. However, those two companies have not made any major breakthroughs under his leadership. That’s partly because they had a bit of trouble with the technology that was available at the time.
Kranz now works at Apple
But now the ex-BMW CEO works at Apple. As a result, it is now suspected that Apple is making great strides towards an electric car (the i3 and i8 are also electric cars). Kranz works under Doug Field, who previously worked at Tesla on the Tesla Model 3. In the meantime, people from the team have also resigned.
In addition, Apple seems to be talking to potential partners around the world. For example, the iPhone maker wants batteries from the largest EV battery supplier, and Hyundai-Kia seems to be responsible for the construction of the car. Those talks have reportedly come to a screeching halt, but nothing seems certain at the moment.
