Buying guide: which iPhone should I choose?

The range of iPhones is larger than ever, making it even more difficult to choose the right device. In this article, you will find out which iPhone is best for you.

Guide: Which iPhone Should I Buy?

In the past, choosing a new iPhone was a lot easier than it is now. In the year 2020, here is a matching iPhone for every type of user. This makes choosing a suitable smartphone more difficult, especially because the differences between ‘older’ iPhones are sometimes not huge.

But which iPhone is the best one to choose from although there is a considerable price difference between the cheapest and most expensive model, Apple is not a budget brand and you have to spend a considerable amount for each iPhone. Making the right choice is therefore important, which is why we give you a hand in this article.

Note: Apple is expected to unveil four iPhone 12 models in late September or early October. We will update this buying guide as soon as the 2020 iPhones are officially unveiled.

Which iPhone should I choose?

  1. High-end: iPhone 11 Pro (Max)
  2. Midrange: iPhone 11
  3. Budget: iPhone SE 2020
  4. Budget alternative: iPhone XR
  5. Refurbished tip: iPhone 8 (Plus)

High-end: iPhone 11 Pro (Max)

The iPhone 11 Pro succeeds the iPhone XS and is Apple’s latest high-end model. That also makes it the most powerful and best iPhone of the moment. The Pro is (splash) waterproof and does exactly what you would expect from a good smartphone. The camera is one of the best of the moment and due to the top performance, long battery life, and software updates that will last for years, the 11 Pro is a smartphone that you can buy with confidence.

The camera has been greatly improved compared to the iPhone XS, mainly due to the Night mode and Deep Fusion technology. This allows you to take good photos even in low light. The selfie camera has also been improved and the battery life lasts an average of four hours longer than its predecessor.

  • Lightning fast thanks to A13 chip
  • Excellent triple camera
  • Beautiful OLED screen

  • Pricey
  • The iPhone 11 Pro Max is very large at 6.5 inches

Midrange: iPhone 11

The iPhone 11 is the latest entry-level model from Apple that came out in 2019. With the 6.1-inch LCD screen, it is the same size as the iPhone XR. The dual camera on the back consists of a wide-angle lens and an ultra-wide-angle lens, with which you can easily photograph a large landscape or a large group of friends.

The iPhone 11 is the successor to the iPhone XR and has mainly been improved in the camera. Furthermore, the device has a faster Face ID and Night mode. The iPhone also works faster, thanks to the fast A13 chip. In addition, the battery lasts a lot longer. In short, if you are looking for a new iPhone, the iPhone 11 is an excellent choice.

  • Lightning fast thanks to A13 chip
  • Available in bright colors
  • Dual camera lens with Night mode

  • No OLED screen but LCD display
  • Wider screen edges than Pro models

Budget: iPhone SE 2020

The iPhone SE 2020 is Apple’s budget iPhone and the successor to the iPhone SE. The design of the device is identical to that of the iPhone 8 with its 4.7-inch Retina display, but has the speed of the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro. If you are going for a new device, we also advise you not to go for an iPhone 8 or older device.

The iPhone SE is suitable if you are looking for a compact device that will last a long time. Apple keeps the device cheap because of the housing, but does not sacrifice much on the inside. If you want a double or triple camera, then the device is not for you. In terms of performance and support, the iPhone SE 2020 is the best deal in its price range.

  • Lightning fast thanks to A13 chip
  • Top performance at an affordable price
  • Long battery life

  • Outdated design with large screen edges
  • Single camera lens without Night mode

Budget alternative: iPhone XR

The iPhone XR is the entry-level model of 2018. In contrast to the XS (Max), the device has a single camera, no OLED screen and no 3D Touch. In addition, the XR is less water and dust resistant. The camera is also lagging behind compared to newer iPhones. Yet the XR is still a great device that still lasts well.

However, the new price of the XR is not much different from the XS, which is why we would rather recommend the iPhone XS (Max). So if you are planning to purchase a new iPhone, this is not the best choice. If you can get the iPhone XR for a good price, then you have a great device.

  • Modern design for a lower price
  • Will be supported for years to come

  • Older chip than iPhone SE 2020
  • Camera clearly less than iPhone 11

Refurbished tip: iPhone 8 (Plus)

The iPhone 8  or 8 Plus is an older device from Apple. The phone has support for wireless charging, a glass (and waterproof) housing, an A11 Bionic chip and a good camera. If you value a large screen, the iPhone 8 Plus is a better choice.

Although the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are a lot cheaper, the devices are now quite outdated. The camera is still fine, but far from what we are used to from smartphones. The iPhone 8 (Plus) is also expected not to last very long with the software updates.

  • Wireless charging
  • Hardware in 2020 still running smoothly

  • Outdated design
  • Plus model very large due to wide screen edges
  • No dual camera lens
