Get started with Apple Mac cleaning

There are several things you can do to clean up your Mac computer or MacBook. So grab a cup of coffee or tea, because it’s time for a big clean. We cover the following tips:

  • Tip 1. Remove unnecessary apps
  • Tip 2. Delete downloads
  • Tip 3. Empty the Trash
  • Tip 4. Empty the cache

Delete unnecessary apps

Unused apps take up a lot of space without you realizing it. This slows down your Mac. Time to remove these unnecessary programs.

  • In the Dock, click the Finder.
  • Now choose Apps or Programs in the left navigation.
  • Search this window for apps you no longer use.
  • Remove these apps by dragging the icon to the Trash in the Dock.

Delete downloads

You regularly download files on your Mac. Any files you download will be placed in a temporary folder by your Mac. Files that you only view remain in this folder. You can easily set how often this temporary downloads folder should be emptied:

  • Open Safari.
  • In the menu bar at the top of the screen, click on Safari and then on Preferences.
  • Select the General tab.
  • At the option Delete download list, choose how often the folder may be automatically emptied.

Empty the cache

Your internet browser stores temporary files in cache memory. It is wise to empty it every now and then. You delete the files as follows:

  • Open Safari.
  • In the menu bar at the top of the screen, click on Safari and then on Preferences.
  • Choose the privacy tab.
  • Click Manage website data.
  • Now click on Delete everything and Delete now.

Your cache memory has now been cleared. As soon as you start surfing again, temporary files will be saved again. So it is smart to remove these once in a while.

Empty the Trash

Now that you’ve deleted all unnecessary apps and files, it’s time to empty the Trash. You arranged it like this:

Empty the Trash

  • In the Dock, click the Trash icon.
  • Click Empty in the window that appears and then choose Empty Trash.
