Disney Plus has announced a price increase. The price of the streaming service will increase by 2 euros per month to 8.99 euros. A whole year of Disney Plus will cost 89.99 euros. The price increase will take effect on February 1, 2021.
Disney Plus price increase from February 2021
The information on the European price increase was announced on Investor Day 2020, an event that provides investors with an update on the company’s future. Currently, a month of Disney Plus costs 6.99 euros, while you take out an annual subscription for 69.99 euros.
Disney thinks the higher price is justified because a new part is also being added to the streaming service: Star. Star contains new content, such as documentaries, films and various series.
Disney has not yet released many details about this new part. Why would Disney Plus itself with Star more focus on adults? During the presentation, the company announced that it would come up with content from Disney Television Studios. ABC, Searchlight and 20th Century Studio were also mentioned. These additions will double the current library, Disney said.
Disney Plus has been available in the Netherlands since November 2019. Belgian viewers have been able to get started with the streaming service since September of this year.
During the virtual event, Disney Plus announced that it currently has 86.6 million paying users. The ambition is to grow considerably in the coming years. By 2024, there should be between 230 and 260 million paying Disney Plus viewers. Competitor Netflix currently has more than 195 million.
