The corona measures are gradually being phased out, which means that it is getting busier again, for example in public transport. Google Maps will now inform travelers through notifications with corona information.
Google Maps corona information
Google wants to inform travelers about corona during their journey and is now publishing corona-related reports from transport companies in Google Maps. Think of wearing a mask in public transport or passing Covid-19 checkpoints if you cross national borders.
The corona-related notifications are first made available in the countries where Google has information from local carriers: Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Colombia, France, India, Mexico, the Netherlands, Spain, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Other countries will follow.
Avoid crowds in public transport
Since last year Maps has been informing travelers about the crowds in public transport and this information is now also being used for social distancing in public transport. You can now see in advance when it is busy at a certain station. This information is based on historical data and can, therefore, help you plan your journey from A to B during quieter times.
These capabilities will roll out in the coming weeks and will be powered by anonymized data from users who signed up for location history in Google, a Google account level setting that is turned off by default. To protect privacy, this information will only come up if we have enough information to meet the privacy thresholds.
