Restarting helps with a frozen Apple Watch. In this tip, you can read everything about the Apple Watch normal and forced restart, reset and reset to factory settings.
Reset Apple Watch: this is how it works
When the Apple Watch is stuck, the screen ‘hangs’. Apple Watch stops responding when you turn the dial or tap the screen. Whatever you try, the Apple Watch is frozen. There is only one thing left to do: restart your Apple Watch. This tip explains how to reboot in two ways and how to reset the watch to factory settings. If your Apple Watch no longer turns on, it may be time for more radical solutions. We provide these at the end of this article.
- Hard reset
- Factory settings
If a normal watch no longer works, take it to the jeweler. With the Apple Watch, you are dealing with a mini-computer and that also includes crashes. In this tip, we’ll show you how to restart your Apple Watch in two ways, even if it doesn’t respond to anything at all.
Restart stuck Apple Watch
You may see a screen with an exclamation mark if the Apple Watch is frozen. Try restarting the Apple Watch in the normal way first. This works as follows:
- Press the side button for a few seconds until the screen shown appears.
- Swipe the option to Shut down.
- The screen will go black and the Apple Watch will now turn off.
You can now press the flat side button for a few seconds to turn the Apple Watch back on. The Apple logo will appear on the screen and your Apple Watch will be ready for use again after a short while.
Stuck Apple Watch force restart: hard reset
If it is no longer possible to operate the Apple Watch, more drastic measures are needed. In that case, the red exclamation mark will often appear, as you can see at the top of this article. A forced restart often gets your Apple Watch up and running again.
- To do this, press the side button and the Digital Crown simultaneously.
- After about five seconds, the Apple logo will appear. Release the buttons.
- The Apple Watch will now be forced to restart.
If you only suffer that an app has crashed, you can also force-quit Apple Watch apps. This ensures that only the relevant app is restarted and that is much faster than a complete restart of your Apple Watch.
Reset Apple Watch to factory settings
If you want to reset your Apple Watch, you can do this as indicated above: press the flat side button and the Digital Crown simultaneously and the Apple Watch will restart.
If you want to reset your Apple Watch to factory settings, you will have to follow other steps:
- On the Apple Watch, go to the Settings app.
- Go to General and scroll down.
- Choose Reset and confirm your choice.
