Perhaps the most important feature in iOS is ‘do not disturb while driving’, something that authorities responsible for road safety has explicitly asked for. The function makes it possible to block all notifications while driving. This means that while driving you will not receive any notifications from, for example, WhatsApp, Messages, phone calls, etc. so that you are more focused on the traffic.
The option can be compared to the traditional do not disturb function, however, it is switched on automatically when you connect your iPhone to your car via Bluetooth or automatically when you are driving. You can also enable the option manually via the control panel.
Set Do Not Disturb While Driving
- Open Settings
- Navigate to ‘Do Not Disturb’
- Go to the option ‘Do not disturb while driving’
- Tap ‘Activate’
Then choose the desired option, you can choose between automatic, Bluetooth or manual. If you choose automatic, the function will be switched on as soon as movement is detected and this is faster than approximately 20 km / h. If you choose Bluetooth, the option will always be enabled as soon as you are connected to the Bluetooth system in your car. We recommend choosing the option automatic or Bluetooth, manual will often be forgotten.
Since iOS 13, you also have the option to silence all notifications when using CarPlay. To do this, check the option ‘Activate with CarPlay’.
Automatically send a message during do not disturb
Via Settings ▸ Do Not Disturb ▸ Auto Reply On, you can choose to automatically send a message to certain people when Do Not Disturb while driving is active. You can edit the message via ‘Automatic reply’. As soon as one of these people tries to reach you, they automatically receive this answer. When the message is urgent, they can reply to the message with the message ‘urgent’. You will eventually receive a notification.
How does not disturb while driving work?
Depending on the setting, the option will be enabled automatically. A message will appear on the screen stating that you will not receive any notifications while you are driving.
If this option becomes active while you are the co-driver, you can turn it off by tapping on the notification and choosing the option ‘I am not driving’. You can also tap the car from the control panel (if enabled) to disable the option.
