A special moment: Apple has officially confirmed that the iPhone 12 will appear later than we are used to. A September release is therefore over.
iPhone 12 officially delayed
Apple made the announcement during the presentation of its quarterly results. Apple CFO Luca Maestri explains that the company sold new iPhones in September last year. This year, Apple expects the new iPhones to be delayed by several weeks.
If we look at the exact date when the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro were sold last year, it was September 20. So a few weeks later means that we can expect the iPhone 12 models to be mid-October at the earliest.
Apple confirms rumors that have been popping up here and there for months. For example, chipmaker Qualcomm announced yesterday that a 5G smartphone from a large company was postponed, and we already suspected that this was the iPhone.
The announcement is striking because the company never speaks a word about unannounced iPhones. This is the first time that the company has confirmed the new iPhones early and provides information about the release date.
Maestri has not explained why the iPhone 12 has slowed down, but the corona crisis will undoubtedly have played a role in this. Apple is still dependent on many third parties to assemble, deliver and sell a smartphone. So there is a good chance that one of these links has failed or has been delayed.
Apple is expected to release four new iPhones this fall: the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max are the outright successors of the 2019 iPhones. In addition, Apple releases the iPhone 12 mini, a 5.4-inch device that is a lot smaller.
What does this mean for the Apple event?
The big question now is of course what this means for the Apple event. Every year Apple presents its new products in September, but with this delay, it could well be that this event also moves up a few weeks. In the past, it has happened more often than iPhones only appeared in October, such as the iPhone XR a few years ago.
So it is still possible that Apple chooses to present the iPhone 12 models, Apple Watch Series 6 and possibly a new iPad Air 2020 in September. You simply have to wait a little longer before you can place an order.
