Several rumors have claimed that the new iPhone 12 Pro will get a 120Hz display. Other predictions now contradict this. Time for an overview.
Overview: 120Hz or 60Hz screen in iPhone 12 Pro (Max)?
For a long time, there have been rumors that the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max would get a ProMotion screen. The iPhone 11 was just about in the shops last year when the website DigiTimes already claimed that the successors to the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max would get a screen with a higher refresh rate.
Such a ProMotion screen has a refresh rate of 120 frames per second. That is twice as fast as the 60 frames that the iPhones now have to do with. This makes animations faster and smoother because they have more frames to show the images.
Other rumors contradict this and state that the iPhone 12 Pro (Max), like its predecessor, will be equipped with a 60Hz screen. For example, Ross Young, who analyzes the smartphone screen market with his company DSCC, recently claimed that Apple is refraining from giving the iPhone 12 Pro a smooth ProMotion screen.
Apple may have changed its mind
What about exactly? It will of course continue to speculate until the iPhone 12 Pro (Max) is launched, but it seems Apple changed its mind at the last minute. Ross Young claims that Apple initially plans to equip the iPhone 12 Pro (Max) with a 120Hz ProMotion screen.
But with the launch of the iPhone 12 approaching, it looks like Apple is abandoning this anyway and has decided at the last minute not to provide the best iPhones of 2020 with the smooth screen.
A new rumor from Young also states that Apple failed to get enough driver ICs for the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max in time for launch. This driver is required to control the screen. According to Young, Apple chose not to wait with the launch, but the company will release the Pro models with 60Hz panels.
The screens of the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max would be able to handle 120Hz, but the hardware to control this is lacking. Of course, it is possible that Apple can exercise its power as a company and still get the driver ICs on time.
It is also possible that Apple will limit the first iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max devices, after which the company will release devices with a 120Hz screen.
Well – known Apple-tasty Jon Prosser tweeted today, however, that we should not give up the iPhone 12 Pro with 120Hz screen yet. So it remains unclear whether we will see the smooth screen in the iPhone again. It will probably come at the last minute whether Apple will manage to implement the 120Hz displays.
More about the iPhone 12 Pro (Max)
The iPhone 12 series will be unveiled soon. As always, Apple keeps its jaw tight, but a lot of information about the new devices has already been leaked.
