The cameras of the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro have received a number of improvements over their predecessors. These are the best new features.
iPhone 12 (Pro) camera: 7 new functions and improvements
During the Apple event on October 13, Apple presented four new iPhones. The iPhone 12 is the successor to the iPhone 11 and a small version with the same specs was added: the iPhone 12 mini. The mini has exactly the same camera as its big brother.
The iPhone 11 Pro models also received a successor. In addition to a new design and extra strong screen, the cameras of the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max have also been improved. We list all the innovations of the iPhone 12 cameras.
1. Night mode and Deep Fusion
The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini, just like the iPhone 11, have a wide-angle lens and an ultra-wide-angle lens. However, the Night mode of the iPhone 11 did not work in all lenses, but that has now changed. All lenses, so both the wide-angle lens and the ultra-wide-angle lens, now have Night mode. Night mode now also works with the selfie camera.
In addition, the Night mode has been improved a lot: the primary camera can now capture 27 per cent more light so that you can capture even more color and detail in a snapshot in a dark room. The Deep Fusion function has also been addressed. As a result, you can also capture more detail in rooms that are slightly less well lit, but not dark enough for Night mode.
2. Smart HDR 3
Since the arrival of the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR, iPhone cameras have Smart HDR. In short, Smart HDR ensures that your photos become more beautiful, without you having to think about it. The colors are automatically adjusted afterwards.
Especially photos with a lot of contrast, such as a blue sky with a person in front of it, are improved by the new technology. The camera technology has been improved a lot with the iPhone 12, making your photos look even better, without you having to do anything.
3. Zoom function
The iPhone 12 (mini) gets the same ‘zoom function’ as the iPhone 11 Pro (Max). With the camera of the 11 Pro, you can zoom in twice without losing quality. With the iPhone 12 and 12 mini, this applies from the most zoomed out point, so from the wide-angle lens. There is no telephoto lens, so there is no real optical zoom.
The camera of the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max goes one step further: with the telephoto lens, the iPhone 12 Pro can zoom in four times from the furthest zoomed out point. The iPhone 12 Pro Max takes the cake: the new device can zoom in up to five times without making your subject less sharp.
4. Improved Portrait mode and video
The camera of the iPhone 12 devices is now better at blurring the background in Portrait mode. That way, your photos will look even more professional. The iPhone 12 Pro (Max) is even better at distinguishing the background and the subject by means of machine learning.
The quality of videos has also improved in the iPhone 12 series. It is now possible to make 4K HDR videos with Dolby Vision. For example, multiple shades of colors are also captured, so that you see more details and the colors become even more striking.
5. iPhone 12 Pro (Max) LiDAR scanner
Thanks to the new LiDAR scanner, you can shoot very well in the dark with the iPhone 12 Pro (Max). Focusing in the dark should be six times faster.
In addition to the autofocus, the LiDAR sensor has another important function. The sensor calculates how long it takes for light to reflect from various objects in the room. This makes it possible to calculate the depth of the room and objects very quickly, which is ideal for augmented reality.
Because the scanner calculates exactly where what is, the iPhone 12 Pro (Max) is very good at placing digital objects in space. This way you can easily check whether a painting fits in your house, or how those new shoes look on you before you actually bring it into your home.
The LiDAR scanner of the iPhone 12 Pro (Max) also improves Night mode: even portraits can now be taken in Night mode.
6. Sensor stabilization
An extra innovation to the iPhone 12 Pro (Max) camera is sensor stabilization. The iPhone 12 (mini), just like the iPhone 11 series, only has optical image stabilization, but the sensor of the Pro Max now moves to make photos sharper.
Especially if you don’t have much light or the subject of your photo moves a lot, it is difficult not to get a blurred (and therefore out of focus) photo. The sensor stabilization gives you a hand by moving quickly, making it easier to shoot action photos.
7. Apple ProRAW
This function is not available yet, but we will soon be able to find it in the iPhone 12 Pro camera: Apple ProRAW. If you take a ‘normal’ photo, there is always some compression, so that the photo file does not become too large. Apple introduces a new photo format with ProRAW that does not require any compression. This is especially useful if you want to edit the photo a lot: it is best to do this before you make the image smaller in order to maintain the high quality as much as possible.
The files are therefore a lot larger, so they also take up a lot of space on your iPhone. That is why it is wise to only shoot in ProRAW if you plan to edit the photo extensively. It is not yet clear when this function will be available for the high-end models of the iPhone 12 series.
