The iPhone 12 Pro Max is getting closer. In this article, we look ahead to the best, largest, and arguably the most expensive Apple phone of 2020. These are our expectations for the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
iPhone 12 Pro Max expectations
It looks like four more iPhones will be released this year. In addition to direct successors to the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, we also expect a new compact model, the iPhone 12 mini. However, in this article we will not dwell on the smallest, but largest model of 2020, the 12 Pro Max.
1. Design: combination of old and new
Since the iPhone X, all Apple phones look pretty much the same, but that would change this year. According to several insiders, Apple is switching to a new design. And not just any design, but a familiar face. Apple would namely ‘mix’ the design of the iPhone 4 with that of the iPhone X.
What should you imagine? A rectangular design, sharp edges and a flat-screen. The back will probably remain made of glass, otherwise wireless charging is not possible. Apple reportedly managed to make the notch, which contains the selfie camera, a bit smaller. So the notch becomes a little more inconspicuous, if we can believe the rumors.
2. Price does not increase
iPhones have become increasingly expensive in recent years. Few rumors have come out about the price of the iPhone 12 Pro Max yet, but we can make an informed estimate.
The largest iPhone of 2020 appeals to the same target group as the iPhone 11 Pro Max, its predecessor and the changes, with the exception of the design, seem to be not too bad. We therefore expect that the device has about the same price tag as the current largest iPhone. Depending on the amount of storage capacity, that means the following for the price of the iPhone 12 Pro Max:
- iPhone 12 Pro Max with 64GB: 1259 euros
- iPhone 12 Pro Max with 256GB: 1429 euros
- iPhone 12 Pro Max with 512GB: 1659 euros
3. Bigger screen with ProMotion
Rumor has it that all 2020 iPhones will be bigger than their predecessors. The iPhone 12 Pro Max would get a diagonal of 6.7 inches, 0.2 inches larger than the current Max model. It is not yet clear what the dimensions will be.
We are almost certain that the ProMotion display of the iPad Pro makes the switch to the iPhone. Such a screen refreshes 120 times per second instead of the usual 60. You notice that difference when scrolling through menus or viewing animations, because it looks smoother.
4. Camera: LiDAR makes its debut
The iPhone camera improved significantly in 2019. That is why less exciting things are likely to happen this year. We do regularly hear the rumor passing that the iPhone 12 Pro (Max) gets a LiDAR sensor. We know this from the iPad Pro 2020 and is able to store in-depth information. LiDAR is therefore ideal for augmented reality apps and games.
5. 5G, No charger and earplugs
Does the iPhone 12 Pro Max get 5G internet? The honest answer is that no one knows. We have heard rumors about iPhones with 5G support for years, but so far all devices have been dependent on 4G. That is not surprising at all, because 5G is not yet available in large parts of the world.
In the Netherlands, the new network is increasingly taking shape, but you will only get the real 5G experience in 2022, when the 3.5GHz band, which is very important for 5G, will go under the auction hammer. Until then, speed gains are limited.
Apple would make a striking environmental choice this year: the company appears to supply the new iPhones as standard without a charger and earplugs. The Cupertino company wants to be completely climate neutral by 2030 and is trying to reduce the mountain of electronic waste. Part of this strategy is to omit chargers, because many people already have an adapter at home.
6. New A14 chip and iOS 14
The iPhone 12 Pro Max uses Apple’s latest processor, the A14. In addition, the device runs directly on iOS 14 on the outcome . The new software, in combination with the A14 chip, ensures that the battery life increases again. Apple has been betting on more energy-efficient batteries for years, so the technology will not be the problem.
7. Presentation in September, then quickly available
Insiders say the global corona crisis has not thrown a spanner in the works of Apple’s production plans. The company is said to be ‘just’ on track to release the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 mini and 12 Pro Max later this year. Before this moment, the new devices will be presented in mid-September, probably without the presence of the public.
