Do you have an iPhone 11 and are you unsure whether the switch to the iPhone 12 is worth it? In this article we compare the entry-level models and indicate when you can and should not switch.
iPhone 12 vs iPhone 11: worth switching?
A better screen, 5G and a new processor. Apple’s new entry-level phone is a nice improvement over its predecessor. But, it is a bit more expensive. Is it useful to switch, or is it better to keep your hand on the purse? In this iPhone 12 vs iPhone 11 comparison, we put the old and new entry-level model against each other.
iPhone 12 vs iPhone 11
1. Design: familiar Apple
Starting with appearance. With the iPhone 12, Apple returns to the design of yesteryear. The new iPhone is clearly inspired by previous models, such as the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5S.
The entry-level model of 2020, therefore, has an angular design, upright edges and a screen that lies ‘flat’ on the housing (and is therefore not rounded). The iPhone 11 (from 2019), on the other hand, resembles its predecessors, the iPhone XR and iPhone X, like two drops of water. The iPhone 12 is a bit smaller than the iPhone 11, even though both devices have the same screen size.
- iPhone 11 dimensions : 150.9mm (height) x 75.7mm (width) x 8.3mm (thickness)
- iPhone 12 dimensions : 146.7mm (height) x 71.5mm (width) x 7.4mm (thickness)
2. Screen switches to OLED
Not only the design has been given a fresh look, but the screen has also been overhauled. With the iPhone 12, Apple is finally making the full switch to OLED, instead of LCD. The former screen technology is superior to LCD in all areas and excels in areas such as color range and contrast value.
The Super Retina XDR display, as Apple officially calls the new screen, is also a lot sharper than its predecessor. The HDR panel has a much higher resolution than its predecessor. Furthermore, the screen of the iPhone 12 can be much brighter: ideal for when you want to read the device in bright sunlight.
- iPhone 11 screen: LCD panel with a resolution of 1792 by 828 pixels (326 pixels per inch)
- iPhone 12 screen: OLED panel with a resolution of 2532 by 1170 pixels (460 pixels per inch)
3. Housing: robust and more watertight
And the screen enhancements don’t stop there. The iPhone of 2020 has a ceramic shield layer on the display. This ensures that the iPhone 12 is a lot more robust than its predecessor. According to Apple, the new entry-level model should certainly be able to survive an incidental crash.
Also handy: the water-resistance of the iPhone has improved. The 12 can dive underwater up to 6 meters (and survive there for a maximum of 30 minutes), while the iPhone 11 can dive up to 2 meters.
4. Cameras are familiar
2019 was a huge year in the iPhone camera field thanks to the addition of a second camera on the iPhone 11. This year the improvements are less drastic. The iPhone 12 has exactly the same cameras as its predecessor. The back offers space for a wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle lens, on the front, you will find a single selfie camera (all 12 megapixels).
However, Apple has tinkered with the iPhone camera software. All sensors now have, for example, Night mode and Portrait mode, and the HDR mode has also been overhauled. Finally, the iPhone 12 has the option to record (HDR) videos in Dolby Vision. The camera changes are greater on the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.
5. Processor: ready for 5G
One of the biggest improvements of the iPhone 12 is the processor. The A14 chip is the beating heart of the new entry-level model (and the other iPhone 12s). The successor to the A13 chip, which powers the iPhone 11 series, is not only much faster but also a lot more energy-efficient. This benefits your iPhone battery life.
Also handy: the iPhone 12 can handle 5G. This feature is especially useful with a view to the future. In the coming years, 5G will roll out nationally in the Netherlands and the network will become a lot faster. Currently, the successor to 4G is already available in large parts of the country, but in reality, we are currently dealing with a kind of test version. Check the video below for more information about this:
6. New life for MagSafe
Apple is breathing new life into MagSafe. All iPhone 12 phones have a magnet on the back, allowing you to clip wireless chargers and accessories, for example. So you can see the revival of MagSafe as a spiritual successor to the AirPower, Apple’s wireless charger that never came out due to all kinds of problems. The iPhone 11 does not have MagSafe support.
7. List price: iPhone 12 is more expensive
Finally, the prices. All in all, the iPhone 12 is a nice upgrade over the iPhone 11, but there is also an increased price tag. The entry-level model is sold for 909 euros. That is 100 euros more than the iPhone 11 cost at the end. You can purchase the iPhone 12, just like its predecessor, in three storage capacities:
- 64GB: 909 euros
- 128GB: 959 euros
- 256GB: 1079 euros
The iPhone 12 comes in five colors: dark blue, mint green, red, white and black. This makes it slightly less colorful than the iPhone 11 because it is available in six variants: yellow, mint green, purple, red, white and black.
The iPhone 12 is a nice upgrade over the iPhone 11, but not a huge one. We, therefore, recommend the new entry-level model in particular for people who want to get started with 5G. The iPhone 12 is also worth recommending if you regularly disturb the LCD screen of the iPhone 11, because you watch a lot of Netflix on your smartphone, for example.
Do not switch
However, the switch is not necessary for most people. After all, the two devices have approximately the same cameras, the battery life remains largely the same and the design has been renewed, but the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 still look quite similar. In addition, the entry-level model of 2019 will be provided with iOS updates for years to come.
