Design and colors
We quickly finished talking about the design and the colors: they are identical for these two iPhones. Both the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini are available in black, white, red, blue and green. Both devices also introduce the new squarer design. In that respect, a choice between the two does not matter.
In terms of dimensions, there is, of course, a difference: the iPhone 12 has dimensions of 146.7 by 71.5 by 7.4 millimetres, the iPhone 12 is significantly smaller with dimensions of 131.5 by 64.2 by 7.4 millimetres. This is also reflected in the weight: the iPhone 12 mini is noticeably lighter at 133 grams than the iPhone 12, which weighs 162 grams.
Screen and format
As the name suggests, the iPhone 12 mini is smaller than the regular iPhone 12. This is noticeable by the size, but especially also by the size of the screen. The iPhone 12 has a 6.1-inch screen, the iPhone 12 mini a 5.4-inch display. The iPhone 12 has a resolution of 2532 by 1170 pixels, the mini a resolution of 2340 by 1080 pixels. Due to the smaller screen, the pixel density of the mini is slightly higher.
As far as screen technology is concerned, the two are the same: both devices make the switch from LCD to Apple’s Super Retina XDR OLED screen. A big advantage, because the two now have an OLED screen that is just as beautiful and good as that of the Pro iPhones. HDR and True Tone is also supported by both.
It will therefore be purely about the preference for a format, as far as quality is concerned, the screens are equal to each other. Keep in mind that the mini can be used with one hand and is the most compact iPhone in years.
The downside of this is that you can see relatively little information at the same time on this screen, and for example watching videos and series will go better on an iPhone with a somewhat larger display.
Processor and 5G
The iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 mini-run on Apple’s A14 chip, the exact same chip that the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max also run on. They also both support 5G, something that is not very useful in the Netherlands at the moment, but which makes both phones a lot more future-proof.
Due to the difference in size and screen, the battery life of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini also differs. With 15 hours, the iPhone 12 mini can last two hours less with video playback, one hour less with video streaming and 15 hours less with audio playback.
Are you not often found near a socket and do you want to get the most out of your battery life? Then the iPhone 12 clearly has an advantage over the iPhone 12 mini.
Good news for the photographers among us who have doubts between the iPhone 12 and the 12 mini: the cameras of the devices are identical to each other. Both devices have a double camera lens on the back. This camera module consists of two 12 megapixel lenses: a wide-angle and an ultra-wide-angle lens.
This allows you to optically zoom out up to two times and digitally zoom in up to five times. Both devices also support Night mode and Deep Fusion technology, which make photos more detailed without you having to do anything.
Besides the screen, the main difference: the price. The iPhone 12 mini is a lot cheaper than the iPhone 12. The recommended prices for the three available storage capacities are as follows.
iPhone 12 mini
- 64GB: 809 euros
- 128GB: 859 euros
- 256GB: 979 euros
- 64GB: 909 euros
- 128GB: 959 euros
- 256GB: 1079 euros
So, what should you choose now? In our opinion, the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini are very close to each other but have a price difference of one hundred euros. However, do not underestimate that the 12 mini has a smaller screen than we are used to from the most recent iPhones.
If that’s not a problem (or maybe even an advantage), the iPhone 12 mini is the most affordable and best choice for most people. In both cases, you get a phone that you can use for years to come, which also makes great strides in the field of display and design.
