The new MagSafe charger also appeared at the same time as the iPhone 12 (Pro), but more is on the way. Apple will soon also release the MagSafe Duo charger FAQ. You can read all about it in this article.
FAQ: Everything about the new MagSafe Duo charger
During the iPhone 12 event, Apple revealed that MagSafe is returning and now works with the new iPhone 12 phones. We answer the most important questions about the MagSafe Duo charger.
1. What is the MagSafe Duo Charger?
As the name suggests, the Magsafe Duo charger charges two devices at the same time: an iPhone on one side and an Apple Watch on the other. You see a magnetic ring on one side to put your iPhone on.
On the other side, you will see a smaller ring that you can push up. Here you can charge an Apple Watch wirelessly. The Duo charger itself has to be plugged in.
2. How does it work?
MagSafe works by means of magnets. Both the standard MagSafe charger and the Duo charger have a magnetic ring so that your device is exactly in the right place.
Also included in the MagSafe charger is an NFC reader so it can detect original accessories. That way the charger only works for Apple products. The special cases for MagSafe also contain a ring of magnets, so you don’t have to take the case off your iPhone before you put it on the charger.
You can place the Duo charger on your bedside table, so you can easily charge your Apple Watch next to your iPhone. By pushing the ring up you can charge the Watch and use it as a night clock at the same time.
3. What are the benefits of MagSafe Duo?
Because you can charge your devices wirelessly, you no longer have to fiddle with cables. Moreover, you no longer need multiple chargers for the products you use every day: the iPhone and Apple Watch. You must, of course, supply the MagSafe charger with power via a socket.
The MagSafe Duo can be folded, making it easy to take with you on a trip. In addition, with other wireless chargers, it is often quite difficult how you place your device on it. Thanks to the magnetic ring, however, your iPhone and Apple Watch immediately click in the right place. With the wireless charger, Apple is taking the first step towards iPhones without a Lightning input.
4. What are the drawbacks?
If you are going to use a MagSafe Duo charger, a case that is suitable for MagSafe is not mandatory, but it is very handy. Because of the magnetic ring in the case, you can simply leave it on your iPhone while you place it on the charger. Otherwise, you will have to remove the case every time. The magnet of the MagSafe Duo is so strong that you have to push the charger down with one hand to pull your iPhone off it.
In addition, the MagSafe Duo charger appears to be less powerful than the standard MagSafe charger. The Duo charges with a maximum of 11 Watt from a USB-C adapter of 20 Watt. If you have a stronger charger of 27 Watts or more, the MagSafe Duo charger will still charge your devices with a maximum of 14 Watts. The standard charger charges with 15 Watts. For the high price of 149 euros, this is disappointing.
5. Where and when can I buy the MagSafe Duo charger?
Although Apple has already announced the MagSafe Duo charger, a release date has yet to be released. On Apple’s site, the wireless charger is listed as ‘Available soon’ and can be purchased for 149 euros.
Still, the release of the MagSafe Duo seems imminent. Apple has received approval in Korea to sell the charger, something that often happens just before the release of a new product. The MagSafe Duo can probably still be ordered this year.
