Motorola managed to return to the high-end segment for years with the launch of its Motorola Edge devices. For the beginning of 2021, Motorola has another high-end device in the pipeline, of which the specifications, design and launch date have been leaked today.
Motorola Edge S
Under the banner of Google, the American Motorola developed high-end phones for years: after the takeover by Lenovo, such developments were covered up. Rather than focusing on multiple segments, Motorola was positioned “under the Lenovo banner” in the mid-range segment.
After focusing on the mid-range segment for years, Motorola’s first ‘regular’ high-end phone was introduced last year: the Motorola Edge (+). For 2021, Motorola has a second high-end telephone series ready with the Motorola Edge S.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 870
Earlier it was leaked that Motorola wanted to equip the high-end phone with a Snapdragon 888 chipset. That doesn’t seem to be the case now – the Edge S is expected to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 870 chipset, a ‘souped-up’ Snapdragon 865+. An image of the upcoming Edge S has also been leaked via Twitter; in the images, we see, among other things, that the Edge S offers space for four camera sensors on the back. The invitation for the launch also shows that the phone will be available in two colorways: in white (Sky) and blue (Beryl).

For the camera module on the back of the Motorola Edge S, there are three cameras, as well as a laser autofocus module. Rumors are speculating that the device will include a 64MP camera sensor for the main camera, with a 16MP wide-angle camera and finally a 2MP depth camera. Details about the two selfie cameras on the front of the phone – which are located in a hole-punch notch – are not yet known.
105 Hz, or 90 Hz?
Finally, there are the previously leaked specifications, where the Motorola Edge S is expected to use a 6.7-inch screen with a refresh rate of at least 90 Hz. Rumors are circulating about a strange 105 Hz refresh rate, take it with the necessary grains of salt for the time being. The screen is probably not an OLED variant. Motorola has incorporated the fingerprint scanner in the on / off button, while manufacturers usually place a scanner in the screen when using OLED panels.
Motorola launched its first high-end phone since its acquisition by Lenovo with its Edge (+)
In terms of storage variants, Motorola would offer several variants: the Motorola Edge S can be configured with a maximum of 12 GB RAM and 256 GB storage memory. Whether this is correct – and whether this will also be possible in the Netherlands and Belgium – will have to become clear at the time of the launch. What is almost certain is that the Motorola Edge S will run on Android 11 at the time of the introduction. Furthermore, the device has an (expected) battery capacity of 5,000 mAh; this battery can be quickly charged with a maximum of 20 watts.
It is still unknown when the device will arrive in Europe – Motorola will launch the Edge S in China on January 26. At a later time, the device will also be introduced in Europe, here the device – as suggested by various sources – will be given a different name. For example, Motorola is preparing to expand the G series to the high-end segment.
