In 2018, OnePlus first partnered with British McLaren. Since then, the manufacturer has been listed as a ‘Formula 1 partner’. In the meantime, the collaboration seems to have ended and it is plausible that OnePlus will no longer market McLaren Edition phones.
In partnership with McLaren, OnePlus released three McLaren Edition phones, the first of which took place in the 6T series. One year later, the Chinese manufacturer released the OnePlus 7T Pro, of which a McLaren Edition was also released. Not much later, during CES 2020, the Concept One suddenly appeared: a concept phone based on the 7T Pro, designed in the McLaren style. Further collaboration between McLaren and OnePlus seems to be out of the question; the OnePlus logo has disappeared on the sponsor page of the Formula 1 team.
OnePlus released its first McLaren Edition in 2018, then of the OnePlus 6T
OnePlus not only brought a new design with the McLaren editions, but the OnePlus 6T also added support for 30-watt fast charging and the phone received 10 GB of RAM. Before then, customers could purchase up to 8 GB of RAM on the OnePlus 6T.
Prices of the McLaren editions were slightly higher than the standard versions: customers were allowed to tap 709 euros for the 6T McLaren Edition, compared to 639 euros for the same phone with less memory and a slower charger. The same price difference was reflected in the 7T Pro McLaren Edition.
OnePlus 8T (Pro)
Given that the official partnership has ended, a future McLaren edition seems unlikely – unless McLaren and OnePlus continue the partnership in a different way, of course. Why OnePlus has stopped working with McLaren is still unknown.
The corona virus may be one of the reasons not to release the McLaren Edition. Over the past few months, we’ve seen the biggest drop in smartphone sales ever. The special models are usually offered less widely because only a limited number of people want such a branded phone.
The design was often the primary differentiation point of the McLaren Editions
In addition to the fact that few devices are sold during the corona crisis, Formula 1 is on its way. So it is not the best time for both parties to continue such intensive cooperation. We are now waiting for official confirmation from OnePlus about future plans with McLaren.
