YouTube Music Starter Guide: This is how the successor of Google Play Music works

One’s death is another’s bread. Where Google pulls the plug on Play Music, the music at YouTube Music beginner’s guide is just getting started. In this starter guide we will update you about the Spotify competitor.

YouTube Music: 7 tips for a musical start

Google is betting on YouTube Music, its own Spotify competitor. Play Music will disappear in the course of 2020 and all customers can switch to YouTube’s music service. This article will get you started using the successor.

1. YouTube Music: what is it?

Just like Spotify, YouTube Music is a music streaming service. It is very simple. For a fixed monthly fee, you can listen to an unlimited amount of music. The app is packed with individual songs, albums, curated playlists, and videos. The download button allows you to make songs available offline so you don’t need an internet connection to listen. You can also download video

2. How does YouTube Music work?

Basically YouTube Music works like other streaming services, but of course it has its own features and functions. As soon as you open the app, you will see three tabs at the bottom of the screen of your smartphone: Home, Discover, and Library. The first window takes into account your listening habits and may present you with nice albums, playlists, and artists a few times a day.

The time is taken into account. So during the day you are mainly offered songs that improve your focus, while the evening playlists are intended to get your feet off the floor. YouTube Music also pays attention to your personal preferences and, with this in mind, may make interesting

The Discover tab speaks for itself: here you can search for new music. YouTube Music distinguishes between new albums and singles, and moods. The latter offers curated playlists based on mood or genre such as hip-hop, pop, music from the years 2010-2020, and, for example, during sports. In the last window -Library- you will find your personal music collection. You can select yourself on downloaded music, playlists, and favorite albums.

3. Advantages: this makes the YouTube service unique

Amazon Music, Apple Music, Deezer, and Spotify: YouTube Music’s competition doesn’t lie. Google therefore tries to distinguish the music service, for example with videos. With YouTube Music, you can therefore also watch the clips of your favorite music by tapping on ‘Video’ at the top of the screen. Then the app immediately switches to moving images. Logically, this does not always work, because a video is not available for all songs.

YouTube Music also automatically provides song lyrics. Do you want to know what is being sung? Then tap ‘Lyrics’ at the bottom right of the screen. Then the lyrics of the song are loaded. In principle, this is a nice addition, but in practice the button often does not work than it does. Lyrics are also noticeably missing from popular songs and artists.

4. What are the disadvantages of YouTube Music?

YouTube Music is certainly not perfect. The music service, like other streaming services, has a few drawbacks. For example, podcasts are missing. Where competitors such as Spotify are increasingly focusing on the audio shows, you cannot listen to podcasts at all in YouTube Music. The quality of curated playlists (which are therefore compiled by an editorial team) also sometimes leaves much to be desired.

In addition, it is a pity that there is no built-in equalizer in the music service. Literally translated, an ‘equalizer’ ensures that the sound levels of different songs are equalized. Such a function would be nice, because currently the songs are not aligned. For example, one song currently sounds uncomfortably loud, while the next song may be playing too soft again.

5. Differences with Google Play Music

For years, Google had two music apps: Play Music and YouTube Music. The former will come to an end soon, so Google is betting on the YouTube music service. Not everyone is happy with this. For example, former Play Music listeners think that YouTube Music feels ‘bare’, because not all functionalities have been added yet. Also, for example, you cannot upload your own music files via the YouTube Music app: you need a computer for this.

6. What does it cost?

YouTube Music has both a free and paid version. However, the chimney at Google, the makers of the app, must smoke. When you listen to YouTube Music for free, you will hear commercials in between. Those who pay 9.99 euros per month are not bothered by advertisements. Also, only paying subscribers can download music for offline use and play videos in the background. So you don’t have to keep your phone’s screen on when ‘watching’ a YouTube

Furthermore, the YouTube Music beginner’s guide service has a family subscription on offer at 14.99 euros per month. You can share this with up to five others. A family package therefore costs at least 2.50 euros per month and has the same features as the ‘regular’ paid subscription. Finally, Google sometimes gives away free YouTube Music Premium for a few months when purchasing certain products, such as a Pixel 4.

7. The alternatives

So, should you start using YouTube Music? The answer to that question mainly depends on your personal preferences. The fact is, however, that there are more decent music services. We recommend YouTube Music beginner’s guide that you try them yourself. All streaming services offer free trial periods so you can see if you like the app for free. Do you want to know more?
